Helmet Fit & Comfort: The Key to Safety and Enjoyment
24th November 2025
When you ride a bike, your helmet is the most important bit of gear you own. It keeps you safe, but it also needs to feel right. A helmet that fits well makes every ride better. If it’s uncomfortable, you’ll end up distracted, sore, or worse off in a crash. Below we list a comprehensive helmet fitting guide so that you can get the right helmet size.
Why Fit Matters More Than Features
It’s easy to get drawn in by fancy extras. Bluetooth, flashy paint, anti-fog visors, all nice, but none of them matter if the helmet doesn’t fit.
A good fit means the helmet stays where it should if you come off. It won’t move around or pinch your head. A bad fit can cause headaches, pressure points, or even make the helmet useless in an accident. Always start with fit first.
Measuring Your Head Size
If you’ve ever wondered how to measure for a motorcycle helmet, its simple, grab a soft tape measure. Wrap it around the biggest part of your head, about an inch above your eyebrows. That number is your head size.
Every brand is a bit different, so check the size chart for the helmet you’re looking at.

How to Get It Right at Home
When you try the helmet on, it should feel snug all the way around. Not too tight, not loose. Shake your head a bit, the helmet should move with you, not slip around.
If you can feel hard spots or pressure after a few minutes, it’s probably not the right one.
Helmet Shapes & Head Profiles
Helmets come in different shapes because our heads aren’t all the same. Most are one of these:
- Round: About the same front to back and side to side
- Intermediate Oval: A bit longer front to back (most common)
- Long Oval: Much longer front to back
Knowing your head shape makes a big difference. It helps you avoid pressure points and makes long rides much more comfortable.
Testing the Fit
Here are a few quick checks:
- Strap: The chin strap should be firm but not tight. You should fit two fingers between your chin and the strap.
- Pressure: Keep the helmet on for a few minutes. If it starts to hurt, it’s not the right shape.
- Movement: Shake your head gently. The helmet should stay put, not twist or wobble.
Comfort Features
Once the fit’s sorted, look at comfort.
- Padding: Should feel soft and even.
- Weight: Lighter helmets are easier on your neck.
- Ventilation: Good airflow helps you stay cool.
- Anti-fog visors: Keep your vision clear in any weather.
When a Helmet Doesn’t Fit
If it feels loose, wobbles, or keeps pressing on one spot, it doesn’t fit. Don’t try to “make it work.” It’s safer and more comfortable to find one that fits right.
